Celebrating the Most Delicious Holiday of All: National Doughnut Day!

June 3, 2020

Sweet-treat lovers understand the beauty of the perfect doughnut. They are, quite possibly, the ideal treat. They have a delicious fluffy texture, gooey frosting, tons of flavor varieties and the best part: it’s basically cake you can eat for breakfast! To celebrate National Doughnut Day, we’ve gathered a list of some great Baltimore doughnut shops, but first, let’s learn a bit more about the holiday and the donut itself.

National Doughnut Day

Love doughnuts just as much as we do? Allow us introduce you to your new favorite holiday: National Doughnut Day. It is celebrated on the first Friday of June. Originally, it was established to honor the Salvation Army “Lassies,” or, “Doughnut Dollies,” who helped the war effort in World War I by serving doughnuts to soldiers. Since then, it continues to be a day to celebrate the wonderful dessert. It’s the perfect excuse to treat yourself to something sweet!

History of Doughnuts

Some form of the doughnut has been served for centuries. However, the doughnut we enjoy today was likely originally brought to America as “olykoeks,” or “oily cakes.” Then, in the mid-19th century, the concept of the circle-shaped treat with a hole in the center was born. Elizabeth Gregory made a circular, deep-fried dough pastry and placed hazelnuts and walnuts in the center because otherwise, the dough was too thick to cook through fully. Then, her son came up with the idea of just forming a hole to solve that problem, and thus, the doughnut was born. Learn more about the history of the doughnut here.

Baltimore Doughnut Shops

Now that you’ve been reading about doughnuts, you’re probably craving one! The good news is that there are tons of amazing doughnut shops in Baltimore. Shop local on Friday to support local business owners on National Doughnut Day!

Diablo Doughnuts

We love Diablo Doughnuts! Just across the harbor in Federal Hill, they are a classic Baltimore donut destination. They offer lots of original combinations, such as blueberry basil and wacky creations like the “Your Mom,” a chocolate cake doughnut with dark chocolate and peanut butter. They’re currently open for pickup on weekends—just place your order 3 days in advance from their website. They start at 9am, but are only open while supplies last (but they’re worth getting up early for, we promise!)

Donut Alliance

Donut Alliance makes incredible doughnuts that are 100% vegan. They are located in Hamilton-Lauraville and also offer pickup on weekends, just call 443-885-9052 to pre-order. Check out their Instagram to see their daily offerings, like chai spice or peanut butter and jelly!

Full Circle Donuts

Full Circle is a woman-owned business based in Hampden. They make amazing doughnuts and have both filled and non-filled options. Their menu changes daily, so keep an eye out for new specials. You just might find your new favorite flavor! You can pre-order via Instagram or by emailing getyourfix3528@gmail.com. They are open weekends from 9am-1pm, as well as Tuesday evenings from 5-7pm for a midweek pick-me-up!

Harmony Bakery

Also in Hampden, Harmony Bakery has gluten-free donuts and desserts that are also allergy friendly. We especially love their cinnamon sugar and chocolate glazed doughnuts. You can place an order online here Thursday-Sunday, and make sure to check out their Instagram page for mouth-watering photos of the daily selections.

Dunkin Donuts

And of course, Dunkin Donuts will be offering free donuts with a beverage purchase on National Doughnut Day.
